MASCOUCHE - OUR HISTORY

A mere 20 kilometres north of Montreal, Mascouche borders upon a river bearing the same name,
originally known as the Maskoueche or Maskouche River.
Before becoming a town, the territory
of Mascouche was originally part of an expansive estate dubbed Repentigny, owned by Pierre LeGardeur
in 1647. The final Lord of the Manor was John-Henry Pangman, who held the post up until the abolition
of the feudal system in 1854.
The Parish of Saint-Henri-de-Mascouche was established in 1750 with a first baptism celebrated on December
29, by Father Simon-Amable Raizenne.
The local English-speaking community originally settled in the area circa 1915. The earliest newcomers
arrived by train from Montreal's Windsor Station. Harry Joy and a dozen or so other English Montrealers
trudged up the hill from the Terrebonne Railway Station to build summer homes in the then "Terrebonne Heights",
well sheltered by the stately pines. Word quickly spread and more people gravitated to the area. Four baseball teams,
a community club, Protestant and Roman Catholic churches as well as an elementary school soon sprang up.
The aftermath of the Second World War (1939-45) brought another wave of arrivals. These valiant veterans promptly
organized the local chapter of the Royal Canadian Legion which, to this day, honours and celebrates those soldiers
who laid down their lives, among them four of Mascouche's finest "lost-in-action": Earnie Bell, Alex Cantley,
Robbie Cantley, and J.D. Williams. "Lest we forget; greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his
life for his friends". (John 15:13).
The community continued to thrive in the post-war era, adding another elementary school along with additional
essential services. "Mascouche Heights", as it has since come to be known, is an area lush with green space and
teeming with wildlife.
Residents of this close-knit and welcoming hamlet have witnessed great changes over the years.
The community's influence and contributions to the town and surrounding area live on to this day,
sheltered by the very pine trees, still standing tall and witness to a deeply-rooted English heritage in Mascouche.
