Environment

Mascouche has long been concerned for the environment and the management of residual waste.

The tangible effects of the resulting « Mascouche Vert » green policy are clearly visible throughout a range of municipal services be it collections, recycling, wastewater treatment or the overseeing of our parks and trees.

The municipality also strongly supports the many eco-gestures accomplished by individuals. Local residents have definitely gotten involved, devoting significant amounts of time and energy towards the attainment of Mascouche's environmental goals. Each and every action has translated into an expansion of selective waste collection services plus a heightened respect for our trees and parks.

The preservation of the woodlands of l'Étang-du-Grand-Coteau Nature Park and the conservation of the mature forested areas surrounding La Domaine du Manoir not only serve to safeguard these precious resources for generations to come, but moreover, they represent a valuable environmental asset. This "green lung" eco-sanctuary, firmly rooted in the heart of town, plays a vital role in assuring the future wellbeing of our community.

« Mascouche Vert » is not just a name, it's a total way of life !

OUR TOWN, OUR TREES
A THREE-PART REGULATION

1. Tree Planting

All new construction is subject to the planting of a minimum of four trees per 20 meters of frontage, of which 2 trees are to be planted in the front yard.

Minimum height at time of planting : 2.5 meters for leaf trees and 1.5 meters for conifers.

The trees must be planted within twelve months of the issuance of the building permit.

Certain species of trees have restrictions as to permissible planting locations. The Town Planning Department can be of assistance to applicants in this regard.

2. Protecting Trees During Work-in-Progress

The trunks of all trees susceptible to damage during a work period must be adequately protected.

The level of the land must be preserved within a radius of 1.5 meters of all trees while the earthwork is taking place.

3. Restrictions Applicable to tree cutting

It is prohibited to cut down trees situated on the 15-meter strip of land bordering public roadways and property lines, with certain specific exceptions.

Considered as trees are all trees or shrubs where the trunk has a diameter of 10cm or more and the height measures 1.3 meters from the ground.

L'ÉTANG-DU-GRAND-COTEAU Nature Park (Project Overview)

The Ultimate Goal

The Municipal Council and its Administration aspire, above all, to protect our "green lung" eco-sanctuary for future generations, in addition to encouraging public access.

The goal of the project is the preservation of this environmental treasure, unique within the greater metropolitan area, as well as the protection of its precious habitats of local flora and fauna, distinct to our region and an integral part of the Mascouche heritage.

l'Étang-du-Grand-Coteau Nature Park is intended, first and foremost, as an environmental timber park, which upon maturity will comprise five lakes and illuminated trails for activities such as walking, cycling, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.all in a carefully preserved natural setting.

The ultimate goal is to be able to journey from one lake to another without ever having to cross a street, using safe, discreetly lit trails, for the continued enjoyment and wellbeing of all.

There will be a chalet for activities while viewpoints will figure the length of the route, as will picnic tables. These additions will serve to enable visitors to better admire the vegetation, the waters and spectacular view. These facilities are to be erected so as to ensure a recreation area for families, operating in concert with the environment and harmoniously with the fauna and flora.

A Long-Term Plan

The town has made use of every urban planning tool possible to properly safeguard these green spaces. The major part of the site has been classified as a "conservation zone", besides the parks themselves which are, of course, considered "park zones".

It is safe to say that this was not a gesture made in haste, but one entailing more than a decade's worth of intricate planning. It would have been almost impossible to acquire and combine such a large amount of square footage without careful consideration and meticulous preparation.

In fact, l'Étang-du-Grand-Coteau Nature Park stems from the vision of our Town Council. The successful evolution of the project has been due, in large part, to the serious forethought and care taken by Council, since the inception of this significant undertaking, back in the late 1990's.

We understand that not every resident of Mascouche has had the opportunity to actually visit the site or take a stroll around the park to admire the magnificence of this local gem, set right in the heart of town, so we've installed a link on this website to offer cyber-visitors a "virtual' tour where they can take in the beauty of what is already ours.

RECYCLING

« Mascouche Vert » - A Green Plan Extraordinaire !

The environment and recycling have always been a top priority in Mascouche.

If recycling is hale and hearty here, it is largely because local residents are actively involved. With the arrival of many young families, along with a growing eco-awareness and genuine concern for the environment, numbers are likely to continue on the upswing as will our recycling needs.

Mascouche offers a variety of collections for recycling purposes :

  • Large items
  • Hazardous waste
  • Branches
  • Dead leaves
  • Christmas trees
Each and every citizen has a stake in the environment. If we all do our share and recycle, our planet will be cleaner and all the more liveable.

« Mascouche Vert » is not just a name, it's a total way of life. from basic recycling to the progressive gesture of preserving our parks and the environment!

Water a Precious Resource !

Did you know ?

43% of all water consumption in the summertime is for non-essential needs like watering the lawn and garden, filling the swimming pool or washing the car.

A mere 3% is used for actual consumption such as drinking and cooking, confirms the Ministère de l'Environnement.

That's why the Town of Mascouche is asking citizens to remain vigilant with regards to potable water consumption, particularly from May 1 to September 15. Respect for municipal watering restrictions has been a great success over the years, so let's all keep up the good work !
